Holi/Fagu Purnima Nepal's Festival of Colour

 What Is Holi/ Fagu Purnima

Holi is the festival of colours, one of the most awaited festivals in the country and celebrated by Hindus & non-Hindus over the country. The festival is celebrated with much joy and vigor all across the country. Holi is not just a festival; it’s a tradition that dates back millenniums. It’s one of those festivals that brings out the child in everyone.

The colourful festival of Holi spans over two days and marks the beginning of spring. On the first day, known as day of “Holika Dahan”, fire is lit marking the victory of truth over evil. The second day is “Phag” when the actual Holi is celebrated with vibrant colours and water. The festival bridges gap between people of different communities and age groups and people hug each other while smearing each other’s face with paint.

When is Holi

This year Holi is on March 18 & 19, 2022. That is on Chaitra 3 of 2078 in Bikram Sambat Calendar.

Holi is welcoming of spring and summer. It is also observed to get the blessing of God for coming harvests and fertility of the land. This festival is celebrated in most of South Asian counties.

Actually, Holi is the night of Falgun Krishna Chaturdasi but the celebration starts from the very next day on Purnima. Holi is the festival of colour, friendships, and love.

What do the Holi colours mean?

Some people believe the Holi colours came from Krishna mischievously throwing coloured water over his milkmaids when he was a boy. This developed into the practical jokes and games of Holi.
